Since his accession to the head of Congo-Brazzaville for the first time in 1979, President Denis Sassou N'Guesso has continued to play a major role in the mediation of conflicts within the African continent.

His work of national reconciliation, at the end of the 1990s, earned him recognition as a peacemaker and consulted on various crises. He actively took part in the peace negotiations ending the civil war in Angola, apartheid in South Africa and which led to the independence of Namibia and the release of Nelson Mandela.

Denis Sassou N'Guesso was President of the African Union twice. He thus became one of the main spokespersons of the continent. In 2013, he played a role in the implementation of the Framework Agreement for Peace, Security and Development in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The agreement which met with the assent of the authorities of four countries, under the leadership of the President of Congo-Brazzaville, in his capacity as main facilitator.

During the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the signing of the "Brazzaville Protocol" on February 11, 2014, Denis Sassou N'Guesso announced the creation of a "Foundation for Peace" in the world, to support all reconstruction actions peaceful in Africa and in other continents.
