TICAD 2022: Congo highlights its priorities for the next five years

The development of agriculture, industry, special economic zones, tourism, the digital economy and real estate development are among the key sectors in which the Congolese government would like to see Japanese investors increase their financing, in the form of public-private partnership.

The wish was formulated by the Minister of International Cooperation and Promotion of Public-Private Partnership, Denis Christel Sassou Nguesso, during the ministerial meeting for the preparation of the eighth edition of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, by videoconference, on March 26.

Given the guidelines listed in the National Development Plan (NDP) 2022-2026, it is primarily around six axes that the Congo intends to create a framework for economic cooperation with Japan. To this end, the Congolese minister suggested, as part of the promotion of economic exchanges between the two countries, the organization in Brazzaville of an economic forum to promote public-private partnerships with Japanese companies but also, the establishment in Congo of an office of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

"In view of its countless assets, the Congo is ready to welcome Japanese companies. It is for this reason, and with a view to further protecting your investments, that the government will examine a bill to be submitted shortly to our Parliament to provide a framework for public-private partnerships," the minister said.

Beyond the natural potential of the country, Denis Christel Sassou Nguesso did not fail to point out that the Congo has made significant progress in terms of basic infrastructure to promote its economic integration. "Our country is at the heart of the Central African Common Market, a market of 140 million potential consumers that the future continental free trade area will bring to nearly one billion," he said.

"The future road-rail bridge between Brazzaville and the neighboring capital, Kinshasa, will be an additional asset to promote the economic development of our country, and this project will be carried out as a public-private partnership. It is as many assets and opportunities that we invite you to seize," he added.

Scheduled for August 27 and 28 in Tunisia, the eighth edition of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development will be, according to the Minister, a great opportunity for the Congo and Japan to deepen their cooperation, in order to achieve concrete results in the interest of both countries.
